How creating healthy boundaries can be a positive step for our mental health

Many of the students who come to train with us at the British School of Meditation started their own meditation practice as a way to support themselves with their mental health.  They have discovered how a regular practice can help them to navigate the ups and downs of life, and some find too that they can reduce anxious feelings and become much more in touch with the calmness, or even the peacefulness, which resides within them.

Others report that they feel more resilient, some say they are more focused, whilst many others tell us they feel more positive.  There are, in fact, innumerable benefits to a consistent practice.

The improvements to their wellbeing is often the impetus for the students to get in touch with us  - they want to share the wonderful benefits with others and train to be an externally accredited meditation teacher.

Teaching meditation is certainly a rewarding career – being able to support people in your corner of the world can bring a sense of purpose to your own life.

During our training, one of the units we teach focuses on running a meditation business.  Having an awareness of the many varied hats you will need to wear when setting up a business means you can enter into the experience feeling prepared with appropriate strategies in place.  We look at the professionalism of the role, which includes considering the relationship you will have with your students which encompasses safety, fairness, and trust.

Protecting your health and wellbeing when in the business of meditation teaching is paramount to us.  Of course, a regular meditation practice is incredibly important – if you are going to ‘talk the talk’, you will also need to ‘walk the walk’.  However, beyond this, it is equally important to create positive professional boundaries.

These boundaries create the line between your business life and your personal life.  If identified and used properly, having the right boundaries in place can protect your time, energy, and your mental health in all the right ways.  They are a way of establishing safety, respect, and the integrity, of you - the teacher and business owner.

The right boundaries can ensure you stay in the right lane for teaching, and not lean to areas which are outside of your expertise, going a long way to reducing any stress and anxiety and always ensuring a teacher/student relationship is within a healthy framework.

Once in place, the boundaries can become daily good habits to support your meditation business success and well-being, and allow you to always the be the bring the best of yourself to your teaching.

If you like the idea of teaching others to meditate, and creating healthy boundaries to do so, please get in touch to find out the steps to becoming an externally accredited meditation with the British School of Meditation.
