A gentle look inside a beginner meditation course

Starting something new can often feel uncomfortable. In this blog, we’ll look at what you can expect from a beginner’s course with one of our registered British School of Meditation teachers.

Before the course starts:
Good communication with your meditation teacher is essential. They will usually have a registration process that includes a form for you to complete. This helps them understand any health or medical issues you may have, so they can keep an eye on you and modify the experience if needed.
Your teacher will also confirm when and where to attend. They may provide a little detail about the course, along with practical guidance such as what to wear, what to bring, or — if you’re attending online — how to create the best atmosphere for yourself. They may also include information about what to do if you’re running late or unable to attend a session.

When the course starts
A warm welcome
You might arrive nervous, excited, unsure, or somewhere in between. Your meditation teacher will set a gentle tone so you can let go of expectations and pressure.
Many of us arrive thinking we need to be “good at meditation”, sit perfectly still, or empty the mind. But you’re there to learn a new skill, and the most helpful approach is simply to stay curious and open.

Expectations
Your meditation teacher will establish some ground rules at the start. This helps everyone understand what’s expected and creates a supportive learning environment. These may include confidentiality and respect agreements, so you feel comfortable asking questions and sharing your experience.
They will also explain what to do if you need to leave the room, or if you feel the need to cough, sneeze, snore, or move. It’s a bit like knowing where the exits are on a plane — it’s easier to feel safe when you know your options.

Exploring different meditation types
We’re not all built the same, and we don’t all enjoy the same things. Meditation is no different. Your teacher will gently guide you through different types and techniques so you can discover what feels right for you. You will normally begin with simple, accessible practices.

Lengths of meditation practice feel achievable
There will be no expectation for you to meditate for long periods when you start. Your teacher will introduce short, gentle practices that gradually increase in length as the course progresses. Your confidence can grow alongside your experience.

Opportunity for reflection and discussion
It’s common to experience restlessness, uncertainty, relaxation, or moments of stillness. Sometimes you feel in the flow; sometimes you feel stuck. Your teacher will create time for you to discuss worries, concerns, or questions. They can offer reassurance, advice, and modifications to your practice.
Some of the best moments come from these discussions. They help you feel supported and remind you that wandering thoughts and distractions are completely normal. You’ll also discover how empowering it is to adapt your meditation practice to suit your needs.

Increasing your knowledge
Your meditation teacher will be equipped with knowledge about meditation, including scientific research that demonstrates its benefits. This can help you understand why the practice is worth it and how your body responds. They may also share some of the origins of the practices or offer deeper insight into what each meditation can bring you.

So when you book onto a meditation course, you don’t need experience, confidence, or the ability to sit perfectly still — just a willingness to learn something new.  With a gentle, steady pace, you will learn skills on how to navigate the practice that can transfer into your everyday life.
